I will discus in my talk a experience that we having in Sao Carlos — SP — Brazil with start up business undertook by professors, students and technicians . Roberto Nakamura holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1986) and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1999). He is currently the Technology CEO of PADTEC.
In the lecture, the EMBRAPII model, whose main focus is to help companies with their demands for innovation, will be presented. In this context, it will be discussed what the EMBRAPII model is and how it has contributed to strengthen the relation between companies and accredited ICTs (EMBRAPII Units). The model is differentiated by its agility, flexibility and risk and cost reduction for companies.

Technical Session: Academia and Research Center
In this presentation we will present an overview of the proposed mechanisms for coupling of light and RF signals into photonic integrated circuits. Current efforts in photonic IC development from the design, prototyping, wafer-level testing, and proof-of-concept demonstrators will be presented.
Social Organization connected to the MCTIC and to the Ministry of Education, provinding non-refundable grants to be invested in R&D&I projects demanded by brazilian companies.
EMBRAPII operates through cooperation with public or private technological and scientific research institutions, that are accredited as EMBRAPII Research Units. These Units focus on entrepreneurial demands and innovation projects that are in the pre-competitive stage.
This presentation will explore EMBRAPII operating model and CPqD's activities as an EMBRAPII Research Unit accredited for Optical and Wireless Communications.
The interaction between Academia and Industry is a challenging task everywhere due to their characteristics and goals which are quite difficult to be matched. In this talk a personal view of, let us say, some identified “matching conditions” will be pointed out and suggestions of how to conduct such interactions will be given. Suggestions to keep academic and industry-oriented activities in parallel and at competitive standards will also be discussed.

The presentation will provide a brief overview of Fapesp, The Research Foundation of the State of São Paulo, and its programs to foster research for technological innovation. Particular attention will be given to the programs that promote collaborative research between companies and research institutions located in the State of São Paulo, namely the PITE Program (Partnership for Technological Innovation) and the Engineering Research Centers.
