Student Paper Competition

IMOC 2017 Organizing Committee, the Brazilian Society of Microwaves and Optolectronics (SBMO), and IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) hereby announce the winners of "IMOC 2017 Student Paper Competition":

1st place

Uiara Celine de Moura, from University of Campinas (Unicamp), supervised by Prof. Evandro Conforti, with the paper “Execution time improvement for optical amplifier cognitive methodology in dynamic WDM networks”.

2nd place

Guilherme Simon da Rosa, from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (Cetuc / PUC-Rio), supervised by Prof. José Ricardo Bergmann, with the paper “Electromagnetic modeling of wave propagation in curved boreholes for geophysical exploration”.

3rd place

Daniely Gomes Silva, from Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI), supervised by Prof. Danilo Henrique Spadoti, with the paper “Full three-dimensional broadband and isotropic carpet cloak”.

Description

The competition was created to:

  • Provide graduate and undergraduate students attending IMOC 2017 with an engaging challenge to embrace
  • Motivate and increase the number of students enrolled on scientific R&D activities correlated to Microwave and Optics
  • Give students the opportunity to meet and interact with IMOC attendees to share ideas, gain new insights, and understand possible practical applications
  • Give students an opportunity to sharpen their communication skills
  • Provide feedback to students about their research and presentation from a panel of distinguished judges from research centers, industry and academia
  • Recognize and reward outstanding student research

IMOC 2017 Student Paper Competition is hosted by IEEE Photonics Society.

Eligibility

Participants must compete individually. To register in the competition each participant must attendee IMOC 2017 as an undergraduate or graduate student and must present at least one regular paper (oral and poster presentation) or one post deadline paper (oral presentation) as its author or co-author.

Registration

Registration may be done by filling the online form and will remain open between August 27 and 30, 2017, at the reception desk of IMOC 2017, up to at least 1 hour prior to the beginning of the technical session where the paper will be presented.

Each competition entry must be authored by one student only – neither supervisor(s) nor other student(s) are allowed as co-authors.

The submission to the Student Paper Competition should provide the paper conference number/code, in accordance to the IMOC 2017 Technical Program, the student name and university, whether a graduate or undergraduate when the work was done. It should also describe succinctly:

  • The research problem and motivation for the work
  • Background and related work
  • Research approach
  • Novelty of the research
  • Results and contributions to the area of the research

Selection Process

The Student Paper Competition is a juried track for IMOC 2017. Juried content will be reviewed by a jury of experts that will evaluate the work based on its overall quality, originality, and relevance to the IMOC community. Submissions will be evaluated based on:

  • Quality of work
  • Novelty of approach
  • Significance of the contribution to the field of IMOC
  • Clarity of presentation (either oral or poster)
  • Visual presentation (either oral or poster)

Result and Award

The competition result announcement will take place on August 30, 2017 during IMOC 2017 Closing Ceremony.

The top two winners will receive prizes of US$ 1,000 and US$ 500, respectively, a certificate in a holder and a gift (bluetooth headphone).
