He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1975), a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Military Institute of Engineering (1979) and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Quenn Mary College / University of London (1986). For 30 years at PUC-Rio, he works in undergraduate and post-graduate studies, coordinating teaching, research and extension projects. He is a member of the Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society, where he was Vice-President (1996), President (1998) and currently a member of the Deliberative Council. From 2003 to 2009 he received Tenure at Florida International University, and soon after assumed the position of senior researcher at CTI, where he heads the Hardware Systems Design Division. Received her B.Sc. degree in Physics in 1995, M.Sc. in Nonlinear Optics in 1997, and Ph.D in Optoelectronics in 2000 from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil, investigating the fundamental and induced nonlinear properties in glasses, optical fibres and planar waveguides through a technique called thermal poling. As a postgraduate, she was also a visitor and an intern at British Telecom Research Laboratories, Martlesham Heath, UK, over several periods between 1996 and 2000, where her primary goal was to implement the thermal poling techniques towards specially designed optical fibres and planar waveguides. Following the award of her doctorate, she was recruited by Corning Research Centre at Adastral Park, UK, to work on advanced electroabsorption-based optical modulators for application in high-speed optical transmission telecommunication networks. In May 2003 she was a core member of the team that moved to the Tyndall National Institute to found the Photonics Systems Group with support from Science Foundation Ireland. Since 2003 Fatima has focussed predominantly on novel spectrally efficient techniques for high speed optical transmission, including all-optical OFDM and multimode fibre transmission.

During his doctorate, he was a researcher at CEA-Leti in Grenoble, France from 2010 to 2013. The subject of the PhD was the study and implementation of advanced modulation formats for optical communications using photonic components in Silicon. He is currently a senior research engineer at the CPqD Foundation, Brazil, in the area of integrated photonics for the next generation 400G and 1Tb optical communications. He is responsible for the Photonics team at CPqD, coordinating the activities and defining the technological routes of the team. He is currently the technical coordinator of the project “Technologies of Photonic Devices for Amplification and Submarine Transmission”, financed by BNDES, Padtec and executed by CPqD. During that time, he participated in two research projects of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme, “Fibre Optic Networks for Distributed, Extendible Heterogeneous Radio Architectures and Service Provisioning” (FUTON), and “Multi-mode capacity enhancement with photonic bandgap fibres” (ModeGap). Currently, he is a postdoctoral research associate in Aston University. His research interests include optical transmission systems using mode division multiplexing, and design of few-mode fibres.

Received a degree in telecommunications engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona (Spain) in October 2009 and Ph.D. from the Politecnico di Torino in Italy in February 2013. From July 2011 to April 2012 he was an academic visitor at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, University of Essex, UK. He is currently a senior researcher in the optical systems division at CPqD where he has coordinated various team activities in Optical Networks including ROADMs and amplifiers. He is now as a visitant researcher at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He is co-author of over 20 technical-scientific articles and his research interests include switching interconnect architectures, optical technology and high-performance optical networks.

He is an Electronic Engineer graduated from the Federal University of Pernambuco in 1989. He completed his Master's degree in Physics from the same institution in 1991. He completed his PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995. He is currently an Associate Professor and Head Of the Department of Electronics and Systems of the Federal University of Pernambuco. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE — Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Senior Member of the OSA — Optical Society of America, member of the Brazilian Society of Microwave and Optoelectronics (SBMO), member of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT). He is a Research Productivity Scholar at CNPq Level 1C. He has published more than 100 complete scientific papers. Has participated in the development of more than 10 technological products, including an international patent. He participated in the organization of several scientific events in Brazil. He works in the area of Electrical Engineering, with an emphasis on Photonics, especially in devices, subsystems, systems and networks for optical communications, and optical sensors.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (1991), a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (1994) and a Ph.D. in Physics — Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine (2001). He worked as a researcher at Britsh Telecom and later at Corning between 1998 and 2001. He completed a postdoctoral internship at INESC-Porto in Portugal. He develops research in partnership with several national companies and with several research groups in Brazil and abroad in the areas of telecommunications, design and performance analysis of optical access and transport networks, systems and devices for optical communications, network communication networks Low and medium voltages and more recently in wireless sensor networks. He is currently associate professor at the Federal University of Espírito Santo. He has experience in Electrical Engineering, with emphasis on Telecommunications Systems, working mainly in the following topics: telecommunications, optical communications, optical networks, applied electromagnetism and optical devices.

He is currently Professor of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Minas Gerais, Formiga Campus. He received the degree of “Licenciatura” in Electrical and Computer Engineering, the M. Sc. degree in Telecommunications and Computers, and the Ph. D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1985, 1989 and 1992, respectively, from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), faculty of engineering of Lisbon Technical University. His Ph. D. work focused on clock recovery circuit optimisation in direct detection optical communications. In February 2005, he got the “Agregação” degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, at IST. In 1985, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of IST. In 1992, he became an Assistant Professor and he was promoted to Associate Professor in January 2002. Over those years, he has lectured several courses on Telecommunications. His main present research interests include fiber optic communication systems and networks.

She was President of the Brazilian Society of Microwave and Optoelectronics (SBMO) from August 2010 to August 2012, a member of SBMO's Deliberative Council since August 2012, present Treausurer of SBMO and Editor of the Journal of Microwaves, Optoelectronics and Electromagnetic Applications (JMOe) since March of 2010.
